What “bamboo mattress” usually means
Most mattresses sold as “bamboo” are not made of solid bamboo. More often they have a cover or fabric made from bamboo-derived fibers (often bamboo viscose or rayon) over a core of foam, latex or springs. Some brands also use bamboo-charcoal foam. That means two things need cleaning: the cover, and the mattress underneath. The core is usually the part that cannot take much water.
Look for a care label or the manufacturer’s instructions first. They override general advice.
Safety notes
- Never mix cleaning products. Do not combine bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other acids. Bleach is not recommended on bamboo fabric anyway.
- Do not combine vinegar and hydrogen peroxide in one bottle. They can form a corrosive acid.
- Ventilate the room and keep children and pets away until the mattress is dry and any powder is vacuumed.
- Be careful with essential oils around cats, dogs and young children.
- Patch test liquids on a hidden area.
Washing a removable bamboo cover
Check the label. If the cover is removable and machine washable, the usual advice is:
- Wash on a cold, gentle or delicate cycle.
- Use a mild detergent. Plant-based or fragrance-free detergents are often suggested.
- Skip bleach and fabric softener, which can damage or coat the fibers.
- Line dry or air dry, or use a low heat setting if the label allows it. High heat can cause shrinking.
- Make sure the cover is completely dry before putting it back on the mattress.
If the cover is not removable, treat it as part of the mattress and spot clean it.
Cleaning the mattress itself
- Strip the bed and wash the sheets and protector according to their labels.
- Vacuum the top and sides with an upholstery attachment.
- Spot clean stains. Mix a small amount of mild detergent with cool water, dampen a clean cloth, and blot. Do not soak, because moisture trapped in foam layers can lead to odors or mold.
- Deodorize by sprinkling a thin layer of baking soda over the surface. Leave it for a few hours, or longer for strong odors, then vacuum it up completely.
- Dry fully with open windows or a fan before remaking the bed.
Treating stains and odors
For light stains, the mild detergent method is usually enough. Some guides suggest diluted white vinegar or a mild hydrogen peroxide solution for tougher spots, after a patch test. Use them separately, never together in one bottle, and do not leave them on the fabric. Peroxide can lighten colors. For urine, an enzyme cleaner that is safe for fabrics is often a better choice. How to disinfect a bamboo mattress
True disinfection is hard to do at home without risking the mattress. A practical approach is to wash the cover and bedding as the label allows, vacuum well, spot clean, and let the mattress dry thoroughly. If you want a product that claims to disinfect, choose one whose label says it is safe for mattresses and bamboo or viscose fabric, and follow the contact time and drying instructions. Avoid bleach. Steam is not always safe on foam or on bamboo-viscose fabric, so check with the manufacturer first.
What is the best vacuum for cleaning mattresses?
There is no single best model. Features that tend to matter are a soft upholstery attachment, good suction that you can control, and a HEPA-type filter if anyone in the home has allergies, since a poor filter can blow fine dust back into the air. A handheld or a vacuum with a small upholstery nozzle is easier to use on a bed. Avoid beater bars or stiff brushes that can snag fabric.
How to clean a bamboo comforter
Check the care label. Many bamboo-fiber comforters can be washed on a gentle cycle in cold or lukewarm water with mild detergent, while some must be dry cleaned. Wash it alone and use a large-capacity machine so it can move freely (our tips for doing laundry cover load size). For another delicate-fiber comforter, see how to clean a silk comforter. Skip bleach and fabric softener. Dry on low heat or air dry, and make sure the filling is completely dry before storing it, since damp filling can smell or develop mildew.
Sleeping on a topper straight away
If you have a bamboo mattress topper, wait until it is completely dry after cleaning. For a brand-new topper, follow the maker’s guidance on airing, as some new products have a smell at first. There is no universal waiting time that applies to every product.
Keeping it clean
- Use a washable mattress protector.
- Wash the cover and sheets regularly.
- Air the bed in the morning before making it.
- Vacuum the mattress now and then.
- Make sure the base allows airflow.
