Quick answer

Blot up as much coffee as possible, dab the spot with a mild solution of cold water, a little dish soap and a little white vinegar, rinse with plain water, and blot dry. Act quickly and avoid rubbing. Repeat if a shadow remains. Old stains take more patience and may not fully lift.

What you need

  • Clean white cloths or paper towels
  • Clear liquid dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Cold water
  • A spray bottle or small bowl
  • A dry towel

Step-by-step: fresh coffee stain

  1. Blot right away. Press a clean white cloth onto the spill and lift. Move to a clean part of the cloth and repeat. Work from the outside edge toward the center so it does not spread. Do not rub, as that can push coffee deeper into the fibers.
  2. Mix a gentle solution. A commonly used mix is about 1 tablespoon of clear dish soap and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 2 cups of cold water. Test it on a hidden spot of carpet first.
  3. Dab it on. Apply with a clean cloth, dabbing rather than pouring. Let it sit for a few minutes.
  4. Blot up the solution. Press with a clean, dry cloth to lift the coffee and soap.
  5. Rinse. Dab with a cloth dampened with cold water to remove soap and vinegar residue.
  6. Dry. Press a dry towel on the spot, then let it air dry. If you see a faint mark when it is dry, repeat the process.

Cold or cool water is usually the safer choice. Hot water can help some stains but may set others, and with coffee that has milk in it, heat can set the milk proteins.

Does Dawn remove coffee stains from carpet?

A small amount of dish soap, including Dawn and similar liquids, is often used for coffee stains and works as a mild degreaser and cleaner. Use only a few drops or about a tablespoon in a couple of cups of water, because too much soap is hard to rinse and can leave a sticky residue that attracts dirt. Rinse well and blot. Test in a hidden area, especially on wool or delicate carpet. Concentrated cleaning sprays are stronger than plain dish soap, so check the label before using them on carpet.

Does vinegar remove coffee stains?

White vinegar diluted in water is a widely recommended partner to dish soap for coffee, and it may help loosen the coloring. It is not guaranteed to remove every stain on its own. Do not use it undiluted in large amounts, test first, and rinse with water afterward. Never mix vinegar with bleach, which releases harmful fumes, and avoid combining it with hydrogen peroxide in the same bottle.

Coffee with milk, cream or sugar

Milk and cream add proteins and fats, while sugar leaves a sticky residue. The same method is a reasonable start, but rinse more thoroughly to remove sugar, and use cool water. If a sour or milky smell lingers, an enzyme-based cleaner made for carpet can help break down the milk. Follow the label, and allow the area to dry fully. Dried or old coffee stains

For a stain that has already dried:

  1. Vacuum the area to remove dry soil.
  2. Dampen the stain with a cloth and the soap-and-vinegar solution, let it sit for several minutes, and blot. Repeat several rounds rather than using a lot of liquid at once.
  3. If you have a light-colored carpet and a faint stain remains, some guides suggest 3% hydrogen peroxide. Test it in a hidden area first, because it can bleach carpet dye. Apply a small amount, wait a few minutes, and blot and rinse. Do not use it on dark carpet without testing.
  4. Alternatively, some people sprinkle baking soda on the damp stain, mist with diluted vinegar, wait while it fizzes, and blot. Vacuum up the powder once dry.
  5. Lemon juice diluted in water is sometimes suggested, but it can lighten colors on dark carpets, so use caution.

Are coffee stains in carpet permanent?

Not necessarily. Fresh coffee often comes out well with fast action. Older stains can fade but sometimes leave a shadow, especially on light carpet or if the stain was heat-set by hot cleaning or drying. If several careful attempts do not work, a professional cleaner may be able to help.

Safety notes

  • Do not mix bleach, ammonia and vinegar with each other. Some combinations release toxic gases.
  • Do not mix hydrogen peroxide and vinegar in one container.
  • Use only one product at a time, and rinse in between.
  • Keep pets and children out of the area until it is dry, and store cleaners out of reach.
  • Hot coffee can burn, so let spills cool and take care when cleaning up near children.
