The first minutes matter

Speed helps more than any product. The sooner you remove the liquid, the less of it reaches the fibers and the pad underneath. The core steps are:

  1. Remove any solids.
  2. Blot, do not rub.
  3. Treat lightly if needed.
  4. Rinse with a little plain water and blot.
  5. Dry the area.

Step-by-step for a liquid spill

  1. Grab clean cloths. Use white or light-colored cloths or paper towels. Colored ones can transfer dye to the carpet.
  2. Blot from the outside in. Press the cloth down firmly, lift, and move to a clean section. Working from the edges toward the center helps keep the spill from spreading. Do not scrub or rub, since this can push the liquid deeper and damage the pile.
  3. Keep blotting until little transfers. Stand on a folded towel to add pressure, if helpful.
  4. Treat if a stain remains. A mild solution of about 1 cup of cool or lukewarm water with a few drops of clear dish soap is a gentle starting point. Some guides add a little white vinegar, such as 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. Patch test in a hidden area first. Dab the solution on, wait a few minutes, and blot.
  5. Rinse lightly. Dampen a clean cloth with cool water and blot to remove soap and cleaner. Do not saturate the carpet.
  6. Press dry. Blot with a dry towel, then let it air dry. A fan helps, and keep foot traffic off the area until it is dry.

Solid and sticky spills

For food or other solids, lift them with a spoon or dull knife before blotting, working from the edges toward the middle. For sticky spills such as syrup or soft drinks, blot up what you can, then use the mild soap solution and rinse thoroughly. Sugary residue left in the carpet attracts dirt.

Spills by type

  • Water or clear liquids: blot thoroughly and dry. See the water section below.
  • Juice and soft drinks: blot, treat with mild soap solution, rinse well to remove sugar.
  • Coffee and tea: blot and treat quickly; our guide to cleaning coffee stains from carpet goes into detail.
  • Red wine: blot first. Some people sprinkle salt or baking soda to help absorb moisture, then vacuum when dry before treating. Test any product first.
  • Grease or oil: blot, then cover with baking soda or cornstarch to absorb, vacuum, and treat the remainder with dish soap solution.
  • Vomit or pet accidents: take extra hygiene precautions; see how to clean vomit off carpet.

Will carpet dry out after a water spill or leak?

A small spill that only wets the surface usually dries on its own if you blot it up and give it airflow. The concern is water that soaks through to the pad and subfloor, because it can take much longer to dry. Dampness that lasts can lead to musty smells and mold growth, and mold can begin to develop if materials stay wet for a prolonged period, commonly cited as a day or two.

To help carpet dry:

  • Blot as much water as you can, then press with towels.
  • Run a fan across the area, and use a dehumidifier or open windows if conditions allow.
  • Check that the carpet and pad feel dry to the touch over the next days. If it still feels damp, smells musty, or the water came from a flood, sewage or a leaking pipe, call a professional. Water from sewage or floodwater can carry contaminants and may need specialist cleaning or replacement.

Getting the smell out after a water spill

If the carpet smells after clean water has dried, it was probably wet for too long. First make sure the carpet and pad are completely dry. Sprinkling baking soda over the dry area, leaving it for several hours, then vacuuming it up can help freshen it. For more options, see our guide to getting odors out of carpet. A persistent musty smell may point to mold in the pad, which usually needs professional help.

Using a steam cleaner or extractor

Steam cleaning, often done with a hot water extraction machine, sprays a cleaning solution and hot water into the carpet and then suctions it back out. It can help remove embedded dirt. Our guide to the best way to clean carpets compares this with other methods, and how long carpet takes to dry after steam cleaning is worth knowing before you start. For a fresh spill, blotting is usually enough, and using a machine can over-wet the carpet if it is not used carefully. If you use one, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, use a cleaning solution made for it, pass over the area without leaving it soaked, and allow time to dry. Check the carpet’s care label first, since some fibers and constructions are sensitive to heat and moisture.

Safety: products, pets and children

  • Do not mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar; both combinations release harmful fumes.
  • Do not mix hydrogen peroxide with vinegar in the same container.
  • Use one product at a time and rinse with water between them.
  • Keep children and pets away from damp or treated carpet, and store cleaners and baking soda out of reach.
  • Ventilate the room when using stronger products.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Rubbing or scrubbing
  • Pouring large amounts of water or cleaner on the spot
  • Using hot water on proteins, which can set stains
  • Leaving the spot damp
  • Waiting hours before starting
